Floor drains efficiently remove water from surfaces, directing it to the sewage system. Commonly used in kitchens, food processing, and hospitals, they often need to be stainless steel for hygiene standards. In restaurant kitchens, they are crucial near boiling pans to manage cleaning water. Proper drainage enhances safety by reducing the risk of accidents from hot liquids and other hazards.
A floor drain collects wastewater and spillage from kitchen floors, directing it into the drainage system while blocking odours and debris. The channel sits flush with the floor surface, allowing liquids to flow towards a central outlet where a siphon traps water to form an air seal. This seal prevents sewer gases from rising into the workspace, a requirement in any food-service environment. The flat base of the channel slopes gently towards the outlet, ensuring water drains completely without pooling, which reduces slip hazards and bacterial growth.
To install, the channel is positioned on the subfloor and levelled using the side-wall pins. The chosen edge profile—standard, vinyl-compatible or tile-compatible—is fitted to match the finished floor material, creating a seamless transition. Once the floor finish is laid around the channel, the outlet pipe connects to the building's DN100 drainage line. A mesh grating covers the channel, catching solids while allowing water to pass; the grating can be specified with a smooth or anti-slip surface and different mesh sizes to suit the kitchen's cleaning routine and traffic.
The unit is constructed as a single hermetically welded channel in AISI 304 stainless steel, with wall thicknesses between 0.8 mm and 2.0 mm. This grade of stainless steel resists corrosion from water, cleaning chemicals and organic acids found in commercial kitchens, and the welded construction eliminates joints that could trap dirt or leak. The central siphon and outlet pipe are also stainless steel, ensuring the entire assembly remains hygienic and durable under constant use.
Controls are limited to the choice of edge profile and grating at the time of order. The edge profile determines how the channel integrates with the surrounding floor finish, while the grating type affects how easily debris can be removed and how slip-resistant the surface is.
A footprint of 400 mm by 400 mm defines the space the drain occupies on the kitchen floor, allowing it to be positioned between worktops, under hobs or in wash-down areas without disrupting workflow. The DN100 outlet pipe diameter matches standard commercial drainage fittings, so no additional adapters are needed for connection.
Cleaning involves removing the grating and flushing the channel with hot water to clear any accumulated debris. The smooth stainless steel surfaces can be scrubbed with non-abrasive cleaners to maintain hygiene standards. The siphon should be checked periodically to ensure the water seal remains intact and that no blockages have formed.
Variants include three edge profiles—standard, for vinyl floors and for tiled floors—and two grating types: smooth or anti-slip, each available in different mesh sizes. These options allow the drain to be tailored to the specific floor finish and operational requirements of the kitchen.
The product is listed in the BHS-G catalogue under floor drainage systems for professional catering environments.
