Floor drains efficiently remove water from surfaces, directing it to the sewage system. Commonly used in kitchens, food processing, and hospitals, they often need to be stainless steel for hygiene standards. In restaurant kitchens, they are crucial near boiling pans to manage cleaning water. Proper drainage enhances safety by reducing the risk of accidents from hot liquids and other hazards.
A floor drain collects and removes water, grease and debris from kitchen floors, preventing slips and keeping the workspace dry. It works by gravity: the channel slopes towards a central outlet where a siphon traps odours and solids while allowing liquid to flow into the drainage system. The siphon's water seal blocks sewer gases from rising back into the kitchen, a requirement in any professional setting where hygiene and air quality are regulated.
The operator installs the unit level with the finished floor, adjusting the side levelling pins to match the floor's fall. Once the channel is sealed and connected to the DN100 outlet pipe, the chosen grating is placed over the top. During use, water and waste flow across the flat channel towards the siphon, where the liquid drains away and solids are caught by the grating or the siphon basket. After service, the grating is lifted, the siphon basket emptied, and the channel flushed with hot water to clear any residue.
Constructed from AISI 304 stainless steel between 0.8 mm and 2.0 mm thick, the channel is welded into a single hermetic piece to prevent leaks and corrosion. The side walls include levelling pins for precise alignment with the surrounding floor. Edge profiles are available to match standard, vinyl or tiled finishes, ensuring a seamless transition between the drain and the floor surface. The outlet is fitted with a siphon and a stainless steel pipe of 108 mm external diameter.
Controls are limited to the levelling pins, which set the channel's height and pitch. The central siphon requires no adjustment; it maintains its water seal automatically once connected to the drainage line.
A size of 500 x 500 mm provides a generous catchment area for high-volume wet areas such as pot-wash stations, under combi ovens or beside preparation sinks. The stainless steel construction withstands the weight of trolleys and foot traffic, while the welded seams eliminate weak points that could harbour bacteria. The optional mesh gratings—smooth or anti-slip—allow the operator to balance flow rate against debris size, adapting the drain to the specific waste stream of the kitchen.
Cleaning involves removing the grating, emptying the siphon basket, and scrubbing the channel with a non-abrasive brush and sanitiser. The welded construction means there are no crevices where grease can accumulate, reducing the time needed for daily maintenance.
Variants include three edge profiles—standard, vinyl and tiled—and two grating types with different mesh sizes. The product is listed in the BHS-G catalogue under floor drainage systems for professional kitchens and food-processing areas.
