The cooling element is a reusable cooling pack for insulated boxes that, once fully frozen, helps maintain a temperature between −15 °C and −10 °C for several hours.
A cooling element designed to maintain low temperatures inside insulated thermoboxes without power. It absorbs heat from the surrounding air and food, slowing the rise in temperature during transport or holding. The element contains a phase-change material that freezes solid at sub-zero temperatures and then melts gradually as it absorbs heat, releasing stored cold over several hours.
Before use, the element must be frozen in a freezer until its contents are completely solid. This typically takes at least twelve hours at -18 °C or lower. To check readiness, shake the element—if no liquid movement is felt or heard, it is fully frozen and ready to place inside the thermobox. Once loaded, it will hold the internal temperature between -15 °C and -10 °C for an extended period, depending on ambient conditions and the insulation of the box.
The element is constructed from high-density polyethylene (HDPE), a durable plastic that resists cracking at low temperatures. Its internal mixture of water and ammonium chloride provides the phase-change material that stores and releases cold. The flat, rectangular shape allows it to lie along the base or side of a standard gastronorm (GN) container, maximising contact with the stored food.
Controls are not required; the element operates passively once frozen. Its weight of just over two kilograms makes it easy to handle and position inside the thermobox. The dimensions of 320 mm by 260 mm by 30 mm match the GN1/2 container size, ensuring a snug fit without obstructing the lid or other containers.
In practice, the temperature range of -15 °C to -10 °C is suitable for holding frozen or chilled foods that require strict temperature control, such as ice cream, seafood or prepared meals. The element does not cool actively but extends the time food remains within safe limits after removal from a freezer or chiller.
Cleaning is straightforward: wipe the HDPE surface with a damp cloth after use. Avoid abrasive cleaners or sharp tools that could scratch the plastic. Store the element in a dry place when not in use, and refreeze it promptly after each use to prepare for the next service.
This cooling element is compatible with standard thermoboxes and gastronorm containers, particularly those sized for GN1/2 inserts. It is categorised under cooling accessories for professional catering transport.
