A gasket filter holder forms the seal between the portafilter and the group head of an espresso machine. It sits inside the portafilter basket, pressing the rubber gasket against the metal rim to prevent water leaking under pressure. Without a firm seal, the machine cannot build the required extraction pressure, and the shot may spray or drip instead of flowing smoothly.

The operator places the gasket into the portafilter basket, ensuring the flat side faces down and the bevelled edge faces up. Once seated, the portafilter locks into the group head, compressing the gasket evenly around the rim. During extraction, the gasket expands slightly under heat and pressure, tightening the seal. After each use, the portafilter is removed, and the gasket remains in place until it wears or deforms.
