A halogen lamp produces bright, white light by passing an electric current through a tungsten filament sealed in a small quartz capsule filled with halogen gas. The gas recycles evaporated tungsten back onto the filament, raising the temperature and increasing light output without shortening the lamp's life. This process delivers the intense, even illumination needed inside professional ovens, where chefs must judge colour and doneness at a glance through the glass door.

To replace the lamp, the oven is first switched off and allowed to cool. The power is isolated at the circuit breaker, then the oven door is opened and the old lamp is unscrewed from its G4 socket.
