An electric grill heats food by direct contact with a hot surface, eliminating the need for open flames or hot gases. Two independent heating elements beneath the cast-iron plates convert electrical energy into radiant and conducted heat, concentrating the energy where the food touches the plate.
The operator places food directly onto the preheated plates, closes the lid to trap heat and steam, and sets the thermostat for the desired temperature. The dual 4 kW zones allow two different temperatures to be run at once, so one side can sear steaks while the other gently cooks fish. A timer or visual check signals when the food is ready; the lid is lifted and the food removed with a spatula. The plates retain heat, so the next batch can be started immediately without waiting for recovery.
The grill is built as a free-standing worktop unit. The body is stainless steel, chosen for its resistance to corrosion, heat and cleaning chemicals. The cooking plates are cast iron, which holds and distributes heat evenly across the surface. The unit stands on adjustable feet for levelling on uneven floors.
Controls consist of two thermostats, one for each 4 kW zone, and two indicator lights that show when the elements are heating. The thermostats allow precise temperature control across the full working range, from low settings for delicate items to high heat for searing.
An 8 kW power rating requires a 400 V three-phase supply, the standard for heavy-duty catering equipment. This voltage and phase configuration spreads the load across three circuits, reducing the current on any single wire and allowing the use of smaller, more manageable cables. The 700 mm width and 730 mm depth fit a standard worktop space, while the 850 mm height allows comfortable operation without stooping. The 97 kg weight indicates a solid, stable unit that will not shift during use but will require two people or a trolley to move.
Cleaning is done after the plates have cooled. The cast-iron plates are scraped to remove food debris, then wiped with a damp cloth and a mild detergent. The stainless steel body is wiped down with a non-abrasive cleaner to prevent scratching. The drip tray beneath the plates collects grease and should be emptied and cleaned daily to prevent flare-ups and odours.
