A Boston shaker combines two separate vessels to mix cocktails by shaking. The larger tin and smaller mixing glass fit together to form a sealed chamber. When the bartender shakes the assembly, the ingredients inside are rapidly chilled and aerated, creating a smooth, well-blended drink with a consistent texture. The method relies on the kinetic energy of the shake to emulsify oils, dissolve sugars and distribute flavours evenly throughout the liquid.
To use the shaker, the operator fills the smaller glass with ice and the cocktail ingredients, then fits the larger tin over the top. A firm tap seals the two pieces together. The shaker is held with both hands and shaken vigorously in a controlled motion, usually for several seconds. Once the drink is sufficiently chilled and mixed, the seal is broken by tapping the side of the tin, allowing the two parts to separate. The contents are then strained into a serving glass.
The Stalgast Boston shaker is constructed from durable metal, with an orange exterior finish. The 0.9 L capacity allows for mixing single or double servings of cocktails, making it suitable for high-volume bar service where speed and consistency are essential.
The volume specification indicates the total liquid capacity the shaker can hold, including ice. This size is chosen to balance ease of handling with the need to produce enough liquid for standard cocktail servings without overfilling.
Cleaning is straightforward: both parts are washed after each use to remove residual sugars and flavours that could affect future drinks. The metal construction allows for quick drying and resists staining from coloured ingredients.
