Coffee tamper ⌀58x(H)100mm
A coffee tamper compresses loose coffee grounds into a firm, level puck inside the portafilter basket. The compacted bed creates uniform resistance, forcing hot water to flow evenly through every particle. Without this step, water channels through the path of least resistance, leaving some grounds under-extracted and others over-extracted, which weakens the flavour and body of the espresso shot.
The operator places the portafilter on a stable surface, fills the basket with freshly ground coffee, then lowers the tamper onto the grounds. Steady downward pressure is applied until the tamper base meets the rim of the basket. The spring inside the tamper absorbs excess force, preventing over-compression that could slow extraction or damage the basket. Once the tamper is lifted, the puck remains in place, ready for the espresso machine to brew.
The tamper is constructed with an aluminium base for light handling and an 18/8 stainless steel spring for consistent tension. The 58 mm diameter matches the standard basket size found in most commercial portafilters, ensuring a snug fit without gaps that could cause uneven tamping. The 100 mm height provides a comfortable grip for baristas working long shifts.
Controls are not required; the tamper relies on manual pressure. The 0.45 kg weight gives enough heft to compress the grounds without straining the wrist, while remaining light enough for quick, repeated use during busy service.
Cleaning is limited to hand washing. The aluminium base and stainless steel spring should be wiped with a damp cloth after each use to remove coffee oils and grounds. Dishwasher use is not recommended, as prolonged exposure to heat and detergent can degrade the aluminium and weaken the spring over time.
The tamper is listed in the HENDI catalogue under barista tools and espresso accessories.
