A thermometer for stoves and ovens measures the air temperature inside the cooking chamber, not the food itself. It works by exposing a metal sensor to the heat, which expands or contracts a coiled spring inside the dial. This movement turns the needle, showing the temperature on a graduated scale. Because hot air rises, the reading reflects the average heat at the level where the sensor hangs, helping chefs judge when the oven has reached the right conditions for baking, roasting or holding food warm.

To use the thermometer, hang it from the oven rack or stand it on the shelf with the foot. The dial faces outward so the temperature can be read without opening the door. Once in place, the thermometer responds within minutes to changes in the oven's heat, allowing the operator to adjust the controls or move food to a cooler or hotter zone as needed. The clear scale shows increments every ten degrees, so small shifts in temperature are visible at a glance.

The housing is made of stainless steel, which resists corrosion from steam and cleaning chemicals. A small pendant loop at the top allows the thermometer to be hung from a rack, while the flat base lets it stand upright on a shelf. The compact size—sixty millimetres tall, forty wide and seventy deep—fits most domestic and professional ovens without obstructing trays or dishes.

The temperature range of fifty to three hundred degrees Celsius covers everything from gentle warming to high-heat roasting. The five percent accuracy means the reading will be within fifteen degrees at three hundred, which is close enough for most kitchen tasks. Because the thermometer is mechanical, it needs no batteries and will work as long as the housing remains intact.

Cleaning is simple: wipe the stainless steel surface with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Avoid immersing the unit in water, as moisture can enter the dial and fog the glass. Store the thermometer in a dry cupboard when not in use to prevent damage to the spring mechanism.
